How to Begin a Golf Fitness Program

Golf fitness is the hot topic on the professional golf tours, at the collegiate golf level, at the country clubs, and everywhere in the golf industry. But many don't know what it means, what it should include or how to start a program.

Golf fitness means something different to everyone. It can mean anything from stretching before you play to a supervised and progressive daily program. For others it means it's the only way to play golf pain free, and of course there are those that think it is a big waste of time. Whatever your belief, the one thing that can't be denied is the great benefits of regular exercise!

The benefits of exercise are many and backed by much research. We know it can improve your general health and quality of life, but it can also give you greater pleasure and a competitive edge on the golf course. Improved posture (my favorite topic) and flexibility are necessary keys to developing a repeatable and effective swing. Strength, stability and balance are paramount in producing the power needed for out-driving your friends!

However, the secret ingredient to an effective golf fitness program is your ability to take action, and be committed to working consistently on your program. It takes consistent action to make changes in your body. In some cases, you are making changes to muscles that have been lazy or dysfunctional as a result of many years of bad habits and programming.

Research specific to golf has been conducted over the past several years. One study conducted in 2004 looked at a group of male golfers and the effects of a conditioning program on drive distance. The study looked at their club head speed and driving distance before and after an 8 week training program. The training program consisted of strength training and plyometrics (explosive exercises) conducted 2 sessions per week. All subjects in the exercise group showed a significant increase in both club head speed and driving distance. The control group (non-exercise group) showed no significant improvements. Consult with a fitness professional:
One concept to understand when considering a golf fitness program is the immense value of finding and working with a professional. Just like taking personal lessons from a PGA teaching professional, you will benefit from consulting with a fitness professional.

I will discuss the process of selecting a fitness professional in a minute, but I have to emphasize the fact that nothing is more beneficial than physically working with a professional that can watch your every move and assess your physical abilities. Our body, specifically the nervous system, and muscular system are great compensators which results in dysfunctional movement patterns. In other words, our body changes over time resulting in weakness, tightness and even pain. The result is difficulty moving into certain positions, such as those needed in a golf swing. A trained professional can recognize poor movement patterns, bad postural positions, and therefore make changes to your program and initiate corrective exercises.

All of the great sports coaches such as John Wooden, Vince Lombardi, and Casey Stengel, all focused on fundamentals when coaching their players. When training your body as we do with golfers it is no different. The PGA teaching professionals always spend time with fundamentals. When training the body to have better posture, improved flexibility, or a stronger core you need to focus on fundamentals. If your body's muscles do not function correctly from a fundamental perspective any advanced exercise will be a waste of time.

OK now, when searching for a fitness professional, ideally try to find someone that has several years of experience working with golfers. Make sure they have adequate training. For example a licensed athletic trainer (ATC), a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) or a certified personal trainer (CPT), are credentials that make them qualified.

Ask questions regarding their golf experience. Do they play the game? Do they have relationships with teaching professionals? Do they understand the mechanics of the golf swing, as well as swing faults? Also, ask specific questions regarding their approach to fitness. Do they provide a physical assessment? Do they address the different components of fitness (see below)? And, are they experienced in dealing with injuries or chronic problems?

You need to be able to trust your fitness professional, have confidence in their abilities and feel comfortable working with them. When you are satisfied with their answers to your questions, make a decision and go for it.

Components of a Golf Fitness Program:
Posture, I believe is one of the most overlooked areas when it comes to fitness training. An individual's posture tells a lot about how their body is working and what kind of restrictions there may be when trying to swing a golf club.

When discussing posture it is important to keep in mind that I am referring to more than just sitting up straight, or not having rounded shoulders. The entire body from head to toe was designed to be aligned in a precise manner. The body follows the principles of physics by the way the ends of the bones are shaped, how they connect to each other and how the muscle act upon the bones & joints They are subsequently designed to function and move in specific ways.

When out of alignment or out of muscular balance, your muscular function and movement patterns are limited.
With the golf swing the most common postural problem that contributes to bad positions in the swing is the forward shoulders, forward head & rounded upper back. This slouched position makes it really difficult to get in a good set up position and significantly limits your shoulder turn or what we call thoracic rotation. The shoulder turn into the back swing is dependent upon a good position of the upper back at address. Tight muscles and restrictions in the upper spine prevent the golfer from maintaining good posture in the set up. Ultimately resulting in bad positions during the swing, The bottom line is you need to find a fitness professional that understands posture and its influence on movements specific to golf.

Flexibility/Range of Motion refers to the body's ability to move the bones and joints to the limits of its designed capacity. However it must be controlled motion, which I will discuss next.

An example of needed flexibility or range of motion is in the hip joint during the golf swing. As you stand in your golf position and swing there needs to be an optimal amount of rotation through both hips. During the backswing (right handed golfer) your right hip should internally rotate because your pelvis is rotating on top of it. If you have tightness in your hip muscles this motion will be limited. And, as we know, limited motion in one joint leads to compensated or excessive motion somewhere else. Subsequently tightness in the right hip may result in locking of the right knee, a reverse pivot and excessive stress in the lower back during your backswing.

Dynamic Stability refers to the body's ability to stabilize joints or positions during movement. The one area that is most often discussed is core stability. This refers to your ability to stabilize or limit movement in the lumbar spine & pelvic region, an important component of your program.

Dynamic Strength essentially means the same as functional strength. Golf strength training should utilize all planes of motion the body moves in and somewhat golf specific. Isolated strengthening may be appropriate in certain situations but you should mostly strengthen in a dynamic way.

Dynamic Balance is closely related to posture because of the requirements of a balance between muscles and having them function correctly. Your golf professional will work with you in terms of weight shift, balance and the coordinated movements of the swing. The fitness professional may at times address this, but should not get carried away.

Dynamic Power is the actual power that is produced in the movement of the golf swing. One of the key aspects of this power is the good swing that is developed by working with a PGA teaching professional. Power can also be enhanced by first working on the above components and then adding some power exercises. However training power should be the last part of your golf fitness program. I see too many people start with the cool golf specific power exercises with no concern for the fundamentals I talked about earlier.

Cardiovascular Endurance, although not an obvious component for golf, it may be a factor in some cases. You should be able to walk a golf course (may be some exceptions) and generally be in some sort of cardiovascular condition.

To summarize, ensure your program focuses on fundamentals and includes all components of golf fitness. Remember don't do an exercise just because it looks cool or you were told it is good for your golf swing. Every exercise should have a purpose based on your individual needs. Good Luck!

The Best Golf Fitness Exercise to Improve the Power in Your Golf Swing

The game of professional golf has transformed over the years. Many spectators, journalists, and pros themselves state that golf is now a game of power. Driving distance is integral to winning on Tour, club manufacturers gear much of their advertising around the “power game”, and it is a wish of most every amateur.

Improved distance off the tee or with any club on the course requires increased clubhead speed. Clubhead speed is a product of power in your golf swing. Increasing the power in your golf swing will improve your clubhead speed. Equaling more distance on every shot you desire.

That being said, developing power within your golf swing is directly related to the ability of your body to generate power. Often times this is the forgotten component by many amateurs in relation to developing power.

What is the best golf fitness exercise to increase power in your golf swing?

Before answering that question we must look at the mechanics of the golf swing. The golf swing is both a linear and rotational movement.

Composed of finite biomechanical movements performed in a specific order. In addition to performing the biomechanics of the golf swing in a specific order, timing each movement is also required.

In order to perform the mechanics of the golf swing correctly it is necessary for the body to have certain levels of flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power built within the body.

If one does not have these physical parameters developed within the body to a certain level. The ability to perform the mechanics of the golf swing efficiently, and generate power will be compromised.

The answer to the question of the best exercise for improving the power in your golf swing is not one specific exercise.

Improving power in your golf swing requires a “basket or exercises” including flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power training.

How to Play Faster - Golf Tips

Some golfers get frustrated and are looking for golf tips, because an 18 hole round of golf can take over 5-6 hours and take a whole day out of a busy schedule. If this is one of your frustrations, there are some solutions to the problem.

Of course you might have to check to see if you are one of the reasons for slow play. Do you look for lost balls for more than a few minutes? Do you take 10 practice swings? Do you take a long time to putt? If you have any of these slow habits, you might need to overcome them by golf tips, golf putting tips and golf practice tips.

Several other tips that I found useful in being able to play a more enjoyable and less time consuming round of golf:

1. Join an exclusive country club that is rarely crowded.

2- Don’t play at a course that allows fivesomes.

3- Try to play during the week if you have a flexible schedule.

4- Find out what time the first players are allowed on the course and be one of the first groups to play even if it is 5 or 6 am.

5- If you live in a metropolitan area, you might have to drive an hour out of town to find a less crowded course. It could be very well worth the drive with your friends.

Remember these golf tips if you want to play a more enjoyable game of golf and not have to wait 10 or 15 minutes on every hole because of slow play.

A leisurely enjoyable game of golf shouldn’t take much over 4 hours for 18 holes. Enjoy your game.

I'm sure by now you've heard most of the professional players; both men and women actively participate in golf workouts. It's no secret. But why then do most amateur golfers ignore this? Is it because it seems like work? Or, does the thought of actually breaking a sweat get you tired already?

How about the senior tour? Now players are realizing they can still make good money, even after they've turned 50 and can't really compete with the young guys anymore. With the money at stake, they too are all working out. This group of players both amateur and pro is the biggest demographic that needs it the most.

With age comes a decline in both flexibility and strength. When the body declines, the swing goes right along with it. The result is a big loss in yardage, more mishits, and ballooning scores. The end result...frustration! I can't tell you how many times I've played with and received phone calls from older golfers who are just about ready to quit the game.

They are SO frustrated at this rapid decline, that golf's not fun anymore. But there is hope. The answer? Get your body moving just a little better. How? By participating in workouts for golf program that focuses on golf-specific strength AND flexibility. It's amazing to see golfers in this age bracket dramatically improve their driving distance, accuracy and scores.

You don't have to accept that with age, your body declines. No way! You've got to fight it all the way! I'm dead serious. The ones who do, are the ones who are enjoying the game again and taking all the money in their foursome.

What Is A Golf Workout

What is a golf workout anyways? Is there such a thing? You bet there is. The golf swing is an awkward movement that puts a tremendous amount of stress on the body. To prevent injury and improve swing speed and distance requires your body to be both strong and flexible specific to the swing.

I could spend dozens of pages describing what this entails, but for the sake of this concise article, let's keep it simple.

Golf Is Rotational

The golf swing is a rotational movement, with your body in golf posture. Slight flex of the knees and a bending forward at the hips. Since the golf swing is primarily rotational, wouldn't it make sense to focus on rotational strength and flexibility? That is improving your turning ability related to range of motion and speed.

So anything involving twisting with resistance such as a medicine ball, a dumbbell, or even a weighted club would work. You need to have a resistance to take your body beyond where it normally goes.

For instance, if you took a club and placed it behind your neck, got in your golf posture and rotated back and forth; do you think that by itself would improve your range of motion or power?

Use A Weighted Golf Club

No, you need to add resistance to accomplish this. Take a weighted club and make golf swings. Now you'll be making a bigger turn AND improving your power. Same thing with a medicine ball. Make turns back and through holding a 4 to 6 pound ball and you'll see a BIG improvement.

In fact, most of your abdominal work should be rotational. Doing straight crunches won't improve your driving distance. Doing rotational movements with added weight will. This is where I could go on and on, but I won't overload you.

Tips To Improve Your Game

For most golfers, just getting back to the basics can bring around a positive change in their swing. For some reason, we get to a stage in our game where we think we should be powering the ball 350 yards straight down the fairway. When this doesn't happen, we maybe just try too hard, I know because it has happened to me. So I hope these free golf tips will improve your game - they have helped me out over the years.


Check Your Golf Equipment

Maybe you have been playing for a while or even a few years with the same golf equipment. It is amazing how many golfers are using the wrong clubs or golf balls for their game or physique. The worst thing you can do is play with clubs that are too short or long for you. If in doubt, get your local golf course pro to check what length of clubs is right for you.

The flex of the shaft also has to be of the correct stiffness for your swing speed. The more swing speed and therefore power you can produce, then the stiffer the club needs to be. For example, if you can generate a lot of power, you should use a stiff club shaft, whereas a senior golfer and some women will probably need a club with more flex to help generate the extra power.

For golf balls, you have to choose wisely; don't be swayed by manufacturer's hype. You don't want to sacrifice control for distance, so if you still can't hit consistent and accurate shots, don't go for a distance ball. You could maybe try a two piece ball for some distance with a softer cover for more control. Alternatively, go for a three piece construction for a good combination of distance, control, and spin.

The Setup

Some free golf tips associated with the golf setup include the grip, stance, ball position, and address position. There are many types of grips but you should go with the one that is comfortable for you. Note: Hold your club tightly, don't listen to some golf "gurus" that say you should hold the club loosely or just tight enough so that it doesn't fly out of your hands!

The main thing to remember is that the palm of your left hand faces right and the palm of your right hand faces left towards the target. The thumb of your left hand points down the shaft and slightly to the right and your right thumb, on top of your left, points down the shaft and slightly to the left.

Your stance for a normal shot is all about being square and parallel. Line up your feet parallel to the target line with your feet facing slightly outwards. Your hips and shoulders should also be parallel to the target. With your arms straight, your elbows are slightly bent downwards, not outwards, keep your elbows tucked in.

Set yourself up the correct distance from the ball; not too far that you are reaching and not too close that you are crowding the ball. The correct golf ball position is in the middle of your stance for wedges and short irons; half way between center and your left heel for long irons; and opposite your left instep for the driver. Once you have taken a couple of practice swings, move into the address position, but don't take to much time in the address position thinking about the shot - you will tire your arms and legs.

The Golf Swing

There are dozens of free golf tips that I could give you for the golf swing, but they are beyond the scope of a single article. Instead, I will give you the fundamental things to remember when you go to swing the club. Some are so obvious, but it is surprising how many people forget them when in the middle of a round of golf.

First, don't listen to the advice of some golf "experts" that say you should relax when swinging a golf club. The golf swing is a relatively aggressive and physical exertion, so you can't be relaxed. Neither should you be tensed up; you need to be like boxer just before he throws a punch.

To swing a golf club properly you need to be balanced. Keep the weight evenly balanced between the ball of your feet and your heel and slightly favoring the heels. Another thing that helps to keep your balance is by keeping your head as still as possible throughout the swing. Due to the physical forces of the golf swing, your head will move slightly but this is normal - just don't jerk your head or you will never be balance.

Keep your eyes on the ball at all times during your swing. This includes the backswing, the downswing, and just after the impact position. Don't try to follow the ball with your eyes the moment the club impacts the ball - keep your eyes on where the ball was until your head and eyes are forced round by the movement of the follow through.

Your golf swing speed should be consistent from the backswing all the way through to the follow through. Don't make the mistake of starting your backswing slowly and then wanting to speed up the downswing to blast the ball into oblivion. We have all had that feeling, when we are poised to start our downswing, that we can hit the ball a mile. Resist the urge; a fluid and consistent speed will out hit anyone trying to hit the ball too hard.

I hope you will keep these free golf swing tips in mind the next time you are out on the course. Like I said, some are so obvious that you will be saying that you knew to keep your eyes on the ball or don't hit the ball too hard, but believe me, when you focus on your game and you consciously remember to implement these tips, you will immediately see improvement in your game.

High handicappers, low handicappers and even the pros consistently have the goal of playing better golf. The methods often touted to arrive at the target of better golf are as varied as those attempting to achieve it. There are videos, trainers, golf practice tools and hundred of other solutions available all proclaiming you’ll play better golf.

Many who want to play better golf spend hours and hours swinging the clubs, hitting balls and taking lessons from a golf professional, yet still don’t get the results they are after. What’s missing? The solution could be a lot closer to you than you can imagine.

Let’s use the example of taking lessons from a golf professional. A teaching pro can definitely identify what is going wrong, and educate you on the proper techniques to correct your problems. Yet, for some reason, you have not been able to successfully implement or mimic all of the tips from the pros. Many golfers get frustrated because they are not able to make the perfect swing. If you’re having similar problems, there may be a simple solution as to why you don’t seem to be able to achieve your goal.

Good technique is important and there are many benefits to working with a pro…with one major exception…. So many golfers are trying to do things with their swings that they simply physically cannot do. Your body simply is not prepared to perform the tasks you are asking it to do. You do not at present, have the physical agility to reach the positions the perfect swing requires. Many trainers will verify the fact that tight or weak muscles are the number one complicating factor to a student’s success. No matter what the pro suggests, whether it is increasing shoulder turn, improved balance or weight transfer, your body may be incapable of achieving this.
That’s why more and more golfers are spending time conditioning their body for the game of golf. There is evidence which proves that spending time with strength and flexibility training will pay off with more consistent and powerful golf swings, greater stamina and endurance, and thus lower scores.

How To Improve Golf Swing With Visualization

The key in better golf is in the focus itself, just being focused in the game and not getting distracted. Like any other game that requires high level of mental focus and concentration, like chess or any other competitive sport. You are now in front of a pond (water hazard). To clear the pond, you have to hit 200m. If you are a weak player, you don't want to take chance, because you are not too confident of hitting the ball over 200m. So you take 2 x 100m shots to go around the water hazard. But if you are not weak, but also not too consistent in your long shots, then that’s where the devil takes over your mind.

You are "greedy" and want to clear the hazard in 1 shot instead of 2 (the lesser number of shots the better), so you can beat your competitor. If you can’t focus on the job at hand, then when you start to address the ball, you get intimidated by the stretch of water in front of you and start to get less confident in your attempt, and doubts gets into your mind. This "loss of focus" affects the muscle co-ordination and consequently, the swing, and the ball lands in the water. Then the player cursed and the snapshot of the failed attempt is sent to his mind and then carried forward to the next hole, and the next game, and so on…

So how did being focus and how visualization help Joyce?

Another aspect to better golf is visualization - you need to form the "shape" of your shot before you hit it.

Example :-

Scenario

Your ball is on a spot where the hole is 200m in front but towards your left side.

If you just hit straight 200m, your ball will end up missing the hole. So you break your play into 2 shots - hit the 1st shot 100m straight in front of you, then face left and hit the ball towards the hole. Better players like a professional golfer can hit golf ball in fairway a curve shot so that the ball can skew towards the left and land closer to the hole. To do this, he must first create an image in his mind on where he wants the ball to land. This visualization is crucial, else the ball may end up in a bad position, like inside a wooded area among trees or in tall grasses. Then he goes through the swing in his mind - and imagine he hits the ball, it goes through the air, takes a slight turn to the left, falls on the fairway, bounced three times, rolls forward and stop 50m away from the hole. Now, what actually happens is usually quite different from what is visualized in the minds of the average golfer. The average golfer, often do not visualize the entire process. Instead their minds are cluttered with their daily "noises", unable to focus and concentrate.
